What kind of architect am I in 15 years?
Hopefully like now… but free from useless taxonomies…so not anymore a young architect, and luckily neither a female architect; just an architect.
How does my workfield look like by then?
I will continue working in all kind of fields relevant to architecture and urbanism, dealing with different programmes and contexts. I will tend to diversification rather than specialization. Somebody said once that an architect should work as a generalist who knows when to call a specialist.
How do I finance my projects then?
I do not see a difference from now. Revenue has never been stable since I started the office in 2006.
But that is a consequence of not taking compromises. Most of the income comes from competitions or self-initiated studies where I looked for parties. This has kept the office independent from direct clients. It can be more flexible and adaptable to the unsteady income situation, and therefore survive crisis times.
What issues are important then?
For me, the capability of adaptation to work in many programs and contexts, for example: planning social housing in Ukraine, reacting to the demographic changes, studying the influence of Ryanair in the cities, building in a World Heritage Site…
With whom/what parties/institutions etc. am I working on these issues?
With economists and politicians, and teaming up with consultant experts: sociologists, historians, curators, biologists, writers, engineers…
What will be fundamentally different compared to today?
The role of the architect will be minimized unless architects make themselves more valid and relevant; they will risk being replaceable or considered only as an added value.
What can I offer a client (in this new context)?
Better knowledge and broad interests. Good clients are aware of the importance of it to get all the potentials.
What do I expect from a client then (in this new context)?
I hope that clients get more receptive towards the non-established and care for content and quality as much as for budget and planning. It may lead to less predictable results and more ambitious projects.
